Advanced colposcopy – what is it?
Colposcopy is a simple and necessary diagnostic procedure that can be performed during a routine gynaecological visit. In the simple diagnosis, the doctor only reveals the total changes in the mucous membrane of the cervix and vagina. Extended colposcopy is a more in-depth study.
The concept and idea
During the colposcopy, the gynecologist uses a special instrument – the colposcope. It allows you to increase a given area, up to 40 times. If expanded diagnostics is a specialist pre-inflicts on the mucous membrane of the cervix reagents. On the basis of the reactions observed in the colposcope, the doctor makes a diagnosis and prescribes treatment. Thus, the expanded colposcopy is a fixed response of epithelial tissue to specific substances.
Conduct extended colposcopy enables early detection of such diseases and disorders of the cervical epithelium, such as:
- cancer and other.
If there is any doubt or the test gave a positive reaction in the process of diagnosis the doctor may take material for further study (biopsy) to confirm diagnosis.
Do I need to prepare for a colposcopy?
Special training conduct extended colposcopy does not require, however, some recommendations still have to adhere to.
- A couple of days before the diagnosis, you need to refrain from intimacy.
- At the onset of menstruation should inform the doctor so he scheduled the procedure for another day.
- Conducting hygiene of the genital organs before visiting the gynecologist should be without detergent.
- 2-3 days before the diagnosis is required to discontinue the use of vaginal preparations.
These simple rules will enable you to obtain the most reliable results.
It hurts you do?
When we are talking about colposcopy, you can hear the opinion that it is painful. In fact, this diagnostic procedure is virtually indistinguishable from a regular inspection of sensations. Unpleasant moment can be taking a piece of tissue for biopsy or treatment agent. However, this moment was immediately forgotten.
Colposcopy is conducted with the use of mirrors, except it in the vagina no tools will be introduced. The colposcope is located at a distance of about 10 cm from the entrance to the vagina. If there is fear of the introduction of mirrors or potential pain, you first take sedatives or anesthetics.
How to make the expanded colposcopy?
After the patient is placed in the gynecological chair, the clerk enters a speculum and sets the colposcope. First is the regular inspection of the mucosa through the device. The doctor evaluates the condition of blood vessels, and detects changes in the epithelium of the cervix and vagina of a General nature.
After the preliminary examination, the gynecologist proceeds to advanced study. For that he needs to run a few tests, the essence of which consists in coating the surface of the mucous membrane of the cervix special chemical compounds. The reaction of the epithelium will be evidence of the absence or presence of a pathological process. For diagnostic use the following tests:
- with 3% acetic acid (can accurately determine the location to which the developing pathology and to distinguish it from benign for cancer);
- Lugol’s iodine (provides the ability to see the boundaries of pathology);
- adrenaline (diagnosing the condition of blood vessels);
- trichloranisole (shows the presence/absence of an enzyme marker in malignant cells).
The most common are the first two test: with acetic acid and Lugol’s iodine solution. In the first case, the doctor with the swab causes the acid solution to the cervix. A minute later there is a reaction of tissues for processing. If the cells are normal, blood vessels narrowed and become invisible. Otherwise, the specialist makes a conclusion about the possibility of malignant degeneration of cells.
After the test acid, it is the turn of Lugol. All normal cells after application will become brown. Unpainted area on mucosa indicate the presence of pathology. This test allows you to clearly see the affected area, which is important in the separation of a piece of tissue for histological analysis.
Results and decrypt
As a rule, the result of this procedure, the doctor reports at once. The data obtained are recorded in the medical card. If carried out the survey, then in addition there are placed images. Based on the results of the specialist prescribes treatment or additional testing.
You should not attempt to decode the received data of colposcopy alone or attempt to obtain information from the Internet. This approach can only hurt right treatment. Decryption is carried out only by gynecologist.
What to do after the procedure?
Lifestyle once held a colposcopy, is no different from the previous ones. Certain restrictions may be imposed in the case of taking material for biopsy. Depending on the extent of damage to the surface epithelium, the doctor may recommend abstaining from sexual intimacy, sauna and swimming pool, sports and General physical activity.
Among the consequences of the diagnosis are:
- highlight to dark colors (due to the use of the reagent with iodine);
- bleeding (occur after taking the material for biopsy);
These symptoms disappear on their own after a few days after the colposcopy. If this has not happened, but on the contrary, increased bleeding, have a fever, you should call a doctor.
In General, the conduct extended colposcopy takes place without complications and pain, so afraid of this procedure is not necessary.
